The A2A protocol enables AI Agents to collaborate and communicate with each other.
This protocol is an open standard that facilitates interoperability and breaks down silos by giving agents built with different frameworks and vendors a common language.
Agents are autonomous, context-aware systems that act independently within their environment. A2A allows agents from different developers, built on diverse frameworks, and owned by varied organisations to interact, enabling multi-agent systems.
In other words, A2A is:
- An open protocol enabling communication and interoperability between opaque agentic applications.
- An open standard which allows users to connect agents to tools and data through MCP, and to other agents.
- An open standard that lets developers expose portable tools through MCP and interoperable agents.
Note: not all agents support A2A-compatible protocols.
